Palmerston

from the sea to the hills

Run or walk, it’s up to you, but be prepared for a stunning view!

Puketapu

High above Palmerston, atop an extinct volcano, stands the Sir John Mckenzie Memorial

Give yourself a good hour to walk to the top, the first leg across the sheep-filled pasture is deceptively easy-going, but once you reach the base of the hill things can start to get a little tricky.

This location is on private land and closed from September to November for lambing.

Every year in October a race called the Kelly Canter Run is held, with participants racing up and back down at breakneck speeds.

The race is named after Constable Bert Kelly, a WWII Policeman who used to regularly run to the top of the hill as part of his coast watching duties.
