Victorian Oamaru

Attractions

Oamaru was on track to be a capital of New Zealand until almost overnight the goldfields dried up. Take a walk around the town to experience the architecture of a bygone era.

Take a step back in time

Stroll through New Zealand’s best preserved Victorian commercial streetscape.

Take a walk around the southern hemispheres’ coolest town! Also described as sharpest, wacky, and the best wee town in New Zealand! The original buildings, made from locally quarried limestone, are a testament to Oamaru’s boom era, when it was an important port town, sending the first frozen meat exports around the world.

Today, the buildings are filled with galleries, shops, artisans, and delicious places to eat and drink. This area can easily be explored by foot, keep an eye out for Steampunk sculptures, fascinating bookshops, and stunning art galleries.
